New dating concept:
eight dates a night

Eight dates in one night.

It’s not just for guys in the NBA. It’s a feat that single people are achieving all over America and one people will soon be attempting in Manchester.

City resident Ava Weldon learned about the concept on an episode of HBO’s “Sex in the City” and she and a friend were encouraged to try 8minuteDating themselves.

“And we both met people that we wanted to date again,” she said.

Weldon had so much fun she has decided to organize 8minuteDating in Manchester.

On July 29 and Aug. 5, single men and women will gather at Elm Street’s Black Brimmer American Bar and Grill where they will each participate in eight, eight-minute dates.

Weldon said this new method of dating, which began in Boston about two years ago, is much more fun and productive than a traditional blind date.

“First of all, you know everyone there’s single and looking for the same thing you are,” she said.

And it eliminates the pressure of having to engage in endless conversation with someone you find less than compatible — something Weldon said professional people just don’t have time for these days.

After all, she said, it really only takes about eight minutes to decide whether you like someone, and paying $33 for eight dates is cheaper than just one traditional date.

“Usually you know if you like someone in the first few minutes. Why waste a ton of time and a ton of money?” she said.

Singles can sign up for the Manchester events at 8minuteDating.com. During the event, they will make notes about each one of their dates and whether they would like to see them again for dating, friendship or business.

Later, daters go back online and submit which of their dates they would like to see again. If interest is mutual, 8minuteDating will exchange the participants’ contact information. No last names or phone numbers can be exchanged at the event.

“You’re only contacted if you both expressed interest,” Weldon said.

Weldon said that rule eliminates fears of rejection because no one knows you were interested in them unless they express interest in you too.

Robert Jacques, general manager of the Black Brimmer American Bar and Grill, said he thinks Manchester residents will be receptive to 8minuteDating, especially the crowd at Brimmer.

“Many of our customers are single,” he said.

The July 29 event is for single professional men and women ages 25 to 35. Another event for single professionals ages 30 to 40 will take place Aug. 5.
